I understand that there is currently road construction in Gettysburg. What areas will this affect and for how long?
Gettysburg is hard at work preparing for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Construction of new bridges on State Route 116 is occurring on both the east end and the west end of Gettysburg. As well, construction continues on Route 15, both north and south bound.
What should I expect if entering Gettysburg from 116 on the west end of Gettysburg?
The 116 bridge over Marsh Creek west of town has the east bound lane closed with a temporary signal at both ends. This setup will be in effect until April 2013 as the 65-year-old bridge is reconstructed.
What portion of Route 15 will be resurfaced and when will this occur?
Route 15 paving is occuring in Adams County. The project includes resurfacing a 4.6-mile portion of Route 15 between Route 234 and just north of Route 94 in northern Adams County. Motorists are advised that they will encounter single-lane restrictions through the work zone.
How long should I plan to stay when visiting Gettysburg?
The Gettysburg CVB recommends three to four days to experience historic Gettysburg, the Gettysburg National Military Park, and all the fantastic attractions and stores throughout Gettysburg and Adams County.
What is the best airport to use when planning a visit to Gettysburg?
With the central location of our community, visitors can choose from Harrisburg International, Baltimore Washington International, Regan National, or Dulles International Airports.
Is it possible to get to Gettysburg using public transportation?
Yes - it is now possible to get to Gettysburg using public transportation utlizing Amtrak and Rabbit Transit. For a complete schedule of routes from New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, visit www.rabbittransit.org/express/pages/amtrak.html.
How long will it take me to get to Gettysburg from Washington, DC?
We are only 90 minutes from the Nations' Capital.
Are the reenactments held on the Battlefields?
No, because the Gettysburg National Military Park is hallowed grounds, the reenactment is held on a private farm.
How many reenactments are there each year in Gettysburg?
Just one, hosted by the Gettysburg Anniversary Committee. The event is held as close to the anniversary dates of July 1-3 as possible. But, if you can't make that event, Living History Encampments are held April through October giving you a first-hand experience with Civil War soldiers.
I want to find out more information on a family member who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. Where do I start?
There are several ways, including a service through the Gettysburg National Military Park and another through the Horse Soldier.
