Join us on a never before offered, once in a lifetime, guided tour to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Fairfield. This is a unique opportunity to take advantage of having full access to the ground actually fought upon during the hotly contested Cavalry action. Walk the grounds where the Battle of Fairfield took place. We have been given permission from property owners to allow us to take you onto their property. View the Battlefield from both the Union and Confederate perspectives! Walk the ground where Major Samuel Starr was wounded and where two medals of honor would eventually be awarded.
The tour begins in the Town of Fairfield, one of the more scenic and unspoiled towns in America. View the many homes, churches and shops which once housed the wounded soldiers. The tour will continue onto the ground where the Battle of Fairfield took place. This Battle resulted in the highest percentage of loss of any Union Cavalry Regiment during the entire Gettysburg Campaign on July 3, 1863.
Traverse the Union advance up the valley and visit the site of the unfinished tapeworm railroad. This railroad was the unsuccessful attempt by Thaddeus Stevens 24 years before the battle of Gettysburg to link his holdings in the South Mountain range and east towards Gettysburg with the B&O railroad in Frederick, MD. The railroad bed served as the guide for runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad to Gettysburg and then further north as they continued their journey.
View the ridge line on which the 6th US Cavalry confronted three regiments of Confederate cavalry during the Battle, the Confederate artillery position and staging area of the Confederate counter charge, and the conclusion of the action across two farms, the MARSHALL FARM and the CULBERTSON FARM, during the battle.
The tour will conclude with the heated skirmish action of the Union 6th Corps. coming upon the rear guard of Lee’s retreat East of Fairfield on July 5, 1863, resulting in the death of the first Union infantryman killed after the Battle of Gettysburg, the Confederate retreat of the 45,000 rebel troops through the town of Fairfield, and the action between July 3 and July 6 in and near the town of Fairfield.
