Opening of "Treasures of the Civil War"

Sunday, June 16, 2013

During the Civil War, the fate of a nation rested with a handful of political, military and cultural leaders. Some had wartime roles that demanded leadership of them; some had the challenges of leadership thrust upon them. All had one thing in common: while charting the future course of the nation during its greatest crisis, they achieved national fame. Powerful and prominent, they became celebrities - and Americans clamored for details about the lives of those leaders, their families and friends.

The Treasures of the Civil War Exhibit gives a rare glimpse into the professional and personal side of several of the greatest leaders during the war - an up-close look at the giants who shaped today's America 150 years ago and displays historic objects associated with these leaders. Most of these artifacts have never before been exhibited at Gettysburg and come from outstanding Civil War collections through the United States.

The 13 legendary leaders featured are: Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, George G. Meade, John Reynolds, George Pickett, Alexander Webb, William Sherman, George Custer, John Mosby, Frederick Douglass and Clara Barton.

The fee to view the exhibit, housed in the Gilder Lehrman Institute Special Exhibits Gallery in the museum, is included in the standard museum admission fee which is $12.50 for adults and $8.50 for your, ages 6 through 12; or a ticket for only the Treasures of the Civil War Exhibit may be purchased for $8 for adults and $6 for youth, ages 6 through 12. Group rates are available.
