Local historian Debra McCauslin of For the Cause Productions announces a new tour of the area focusing on the lives of African-American residents before, during, and after the Battle of Gettysburg.
I was doing research on the experiences of our areas Black residents during the battle and realized that these people and places would make a fascinating tour, McCauslin said.
On the two-hour African-American Voices tour, visitors learn about Frederick Douglass visit to Gettysburg, the indomitable Magg Palm, theologian Daniel Payne, and members of the U. S. Colored Troops, as well as efforts of Francis Scott Key, William Wright, and Thaddeus Stevens on behalf of their African-American friends and neighbors.
The tour costs $15 for adults, $5 for students.
McCauslin also offers an Underground Railroad tour that introduces visitors to the nearby Yellow Hill and Quaker Valley communities and describes how they worked together to help escaping slaves reach freedom.
For more information or to arrange a tour, call (717) 528-8553 or email [email protected].
A portion of the proceeds from both tours supports preservations of local historic sites.
