Celebrate New Year’s Eve at the Majestic Theater with the Buzz Jones Big Band, celebrating its 30th year of performing music, which features more than 300 performances including three tours of Europe highlighted by concerts at the Montreux and North Sea International Jazz Festivals and in Belgium, Germany, France, Holland and Switzerland.
Featured vocalist Cathy Chemi is one of the most outstanding interpreters of American popular song in the Mid-Atlantic states. Chemi joined the Harry James Orchestra as featured vocalist in the late 1960s and toured the U.S. and the Europe with performances at London’s Royal Festival Hall and the Hollywood Palladium.
The Majestic Theater’s New Year’s Eve performance will feature a broad variety of music for every lover of Big Band jazz. Johnny Mercer’s centennial is in 2009 so “Tangerine” and “Skylark” will be on the program as well as medley of tunes made famous by trumpeter and bandleader Harry James. The band will salute several important Pennsylvania jazz musicians - Henry Mancini, Tommy Dorsey, and Bobby Troup - with songs like “The Pink Panther,” “Polkadots” and “Moonbeams,” and “Route 66.”
Spend the evening reveling in the lush sounds of a 17-piece jazz orchestra or get up and dance to swing standards or beautiful ballads.
Jones is professor of music at Gettysburg College’s Sunderman Conservatory of Music where he teaches theory and composition. During the past decade, he was music department chair and then conservatory director until 2008. He has directed the college jazz ensemble for more than 20 years and is the artistic director for jazz of the Gettysburg Festival.
Mamie’s Café will be open for cocktails and appetizers from 5 to 7 p.m. before the show and one hour after the show. Big Band New Year’s Eve tickets are priced from $40 to $33 (taxes and fees included) for reserved seating.
