A group of inns in Historic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, are going back to the 1860s for their 16th annual Gettysburg Innkeepers Civil War Ball on Jan. 30.
The public is invited to dress up in their best period clothing and come out to the Gettysburg Hotel for a nice of dancing, from 8 to 11 p.m. Dancers can enjoy dinner in the Grand Ballroom at 6:30 p.m. before the dance.
Music will be provided by the ensemble “Smash The Windows,” who began as a Civil War period dance project in 2006 and branched out to play contras and festivals in 2007. The band features Bruce Young on fiddle, Patty Lambert on flute, whistles and concertina, and Peg Shutes on piano.
Lessons on Civil War era dancing are offered the morning of Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom.
This year’s dance masters are Briant and Karin Bohleke, who’ve been described as “elegant dancers and excellent teachers who enjoy sharing their authentic reconstructions of period dance.” Briant Bohleke, a semi-professional dancer, has been involved with Civil War dancing since 1988. He and Karin are dance masters with Civil War Dance Associates, which presents a monthly program of Civil War era dances and workshops at the Village Hall in nearby Fairfield, Pa.
Period clothing or formal wear are encouraged. Several shops in the Gettysburg area offer costume rentals, and the Victorian Photography Studio will be available to take photos of dancers during the event.
Dancers who would like to make this a weekend event are encouraged to contact participating inns directly. Each inn offers a package that includes a one- or two-night stay, dance lessons, dinner, and tickets to the Innkeepers Civil War Ball.

Ball tickets for inn guests are $65 per person and $130 per couple. Tickets for non-inn guests are $80 for the dinner and dance and $45 the dance only. All tickets include dance lessons.
