March for Gettysburg to benefit battlefield preservation

The Gettysburg Foundation will hold its annual March for Gettysburg on Sunday, April 25, beginning at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, 1195 Baltimore Pike. Participants in this year’s March for Gettysburg will be raising funds to return Ziegler’s Grove, center of the Union line on Cemetery Ridge during the Battle of Gettysburg, as close as possible to its 1863 appearance.
Proceeds from the March for Gettysburg directly support the Gettysburg Foundation’s preservation efforts at Gettysburg National Military Park.
Registration for the March for Gettysburg will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 25. Members of the public are invited to participate; pledge forms can be found online in the Event Calendar at www.gettysburgfoundation.org.
The first tour group will depart from the Museum and Visitor Center at 10:30 a.m. and will walk approximately 1.5 miles to the site of Ziegler’s Grove, across from Soldiers’ National Cemetery along Taneytown Road. Groups will depart every 20 minutes with the last group leaving the Museum and Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. During the walk, Licensed Battlefield Guides will explain the historic significance of Ziegler’s Grove to the Battle of Gettysburg.
Individuals who wish to contribute to the March for Gettysburg but are unable to participate can either make a donation or purchase a March for Gettysburg T-shirt. The cost of the T-shirt is $13 per shirt. Donation and shirt order forms are available online at www.gettysburgfoundation.org. (shirts must be pre-ordered.)
For more than a decade, the annual March for Gettysburg has contributed thousands of dollars to preservation projects at Gettysburg National Military Park, such as the removal of utility lines at Devil’s Den on the battlefield.
The rehabilitation of Ziegler’s Grove is a key component of the Gettysburg Foundation’s $125 million Campaign to Preserve Gettysburg, which included construction of a new Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park (opened in April 2008) and other preservation projects for the National Park Service at Gettysburg.
The Gettysburg Foundation is a private, non-profit educational organization working in partnership with the National Park Service to enhance preservation and understanding of the heritage and lasting significance of Gettysburg. The Foundation raised funds for and now operates the Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg. In addition to operating the Museum and Visitor Center, the Foundation has a broad preservation mission that includes land, monument and artifact preservation and battlefield rehabilitation—all in support of the National Park Service’s goals at Gettysburg.
