The 13th Historic East Berlin “Great Country Show” will open Thursday, May 20, with an early buying preview from 5 until 8:30 p.m. The location at the Community Center on North Avenue is a short block from the town’s National Historic District on Route 234 and just 12 miles west of the York fairgrounds.
Dealers from eight states will offer 18th and 19th century Americana including country furniture, pewter, folk and fine art, samplers, textiles, early lighting and iron, PA German redware, Staffordshire, baskets, out-of-print books on antiques and much more. Exhibitors new to the show this year include Kathy Schoemer (NH), B. Hannah Daniel (AL), Deborah Fisher (OH), and Groundhog Hollow, Candlewood Antiques, Stephen Burkhardt and Museum Books, all from Pennsylvania. They join a great lineup of returning dealers such as the Passes, Lynne Dingus, Katona and Lutz and Lynne Oppenheimer.
“This show has a special energy and atmosphere which is hard to pin down, but I think it’s just the right mix of history, small town, good antiques, friendly dealers and very determined volunteers,” according to publicity chair Bev Jadus. At least eight of the participating dealers do no other shows in the area.
All funds benefit the East Berlin Historical Preservation Society which formed in the 1970s to buy and restore the 18th century stone mill at the edge of town. Four more historic buildings were acquired as each became at risk, yet the Society manages to keep all five in good repair through volunteer efforts and active fundraising projects.
Early Buyers’ Preview ($12): Thursday, May 20, (5-8:30 p.m.); Regular show hours ($6): Friday, May 21, (1-7 p.m.); Saturday, May 22, (9 a.m.-3 p.m.) Delicious home-cooked food featuring soup, sandwiches and fresh berry pies available during regular hours.
