Some of the country’s finest crafters of traditional wares will gather along East Berlin, Pa.’s historic district on Saturday, Sept. 11th for the 36th annual Colonial Day. Shoppers from around Central Pennsylvania will fill the town looking for such wares as handforged iron, floorcloths, stoneware, handloomed textiles, dried flowers, rugs, fine antique reproductions, handwoven baskets, and metalwork.

Colonial Day is always a blend of long-time participants and recent additions. Becky Mummert has set up at every Colonial Day since the start 36 years ago, selling the redware she makes at her studio nearby, while East Berlin’s Perley Allen makes her Colonial Day debut with her Shaker candlestands and wall clocks.

“Tasker’s Chance,” will perform near the Studebaker House, blending 17th to 19th century music of America’s past. “The Country Bear Cloggers” from East Berlin, headed up by Roger and Joann Bitler, will give three high energy performances at 9:30, 11:15 and 1 p.m.

Pig roast sandwiches, hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, kettle corn, ice cream, crabcakes, smoothies, apple dumplings, fries, root beer in old fashioned bottles and funnel cakes.

The Society’s quilt raffle tradition will continue this year with a Civil War Soldier Block pattern lap quilt designed and hand-quilted by member Carol Carlson. Second and third prizes include redware by Becky Mummert and an original painting by Bobbi Becker.

A new and very special raffle will also be held this year, a hearth-cooked dinner prepared in the Society's log cabin by renowned Colonial period cook Linda Zeigler. Five winning tickets good for two will be pulled and the dinner for 10 will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, at 4 p.m. The meal will be served in period style with appropriate clothing, cookware and utensils. The log cabin will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Colonial Day for a preview.
Raffle tickets can be purchased in advance by calling (717) 259-0822 or on Colonial Day at the information booth. The drawings will be held the afternoon of Sept. 11. Winners do not have to be present to win.
