South Mountain Fair opens to crowds on Aug. 17th

The 88th annual South Mountain Fair in Arendtsville, Pa. – the heart of Adams County’s rich fruit industry – will kick off Tuesday, Aug. 17th at the South Mountain Fairgrounds on Route 234.

The five-day event will feature rides, entertainment, exhibits, animals and lots of food. In addition, ride specials will be held Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The fair opens with 4-H day on Tuesday, Aug. 17. Starting at 4 p.m., the fair will include sheep and swine judging, food auction and ends with a free youth dance in the auditorium at 9 p.m.

On Wednesday, the fair features goat judging, a horse-pulling contest and the Peak 98 Battle of the Bands, a free event held in the auditorium.

Thursday features dairy and beef cattle judging, and entertainment by “Tall in the Saddle,” a country music band. The day ends with a fireworks display at 10 p.m.

On Friday, cattle judging continues and the band, “Smokey Mountain Sunshine” will perform in the auditorium.

The fair closes Saturday with a draft and light horse show, free with gate admission, along with a livestock sale of steer, cattle, goat, sheep and swine. The day is capped off with a antique tractor parade and the band, “Colgate Country Showdown.”

Admission is $4 for adults, and children 12 and under are free. Gates open at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
