While soldiers faced the perils of the Civil War Christmas offered a few moments of cheer that would help brighten the lives of their families at home. Take a step back in time this holiday season at Gettysburg’s historic Shriver House Museum to discover how Christmas was celebrated in the mid-1800s. Learn how families celebrated this magical season while fathers, sons and husbands were separated from loved ones during this tragic time in American history.
Step through the front door of the 150-year-old home of George, Hettie, 7-year-old Sadie, and 5-year-old Mollie Shriver to see how they prepared for the Christmas holidays. After hanging their stockings on the mantle, imagine the girls setting out milk and cookies under the candle-laden Christmas tree on the parlor table in anticipation of a visit from Santa Claus on that magical night. A fire roars in the fireplace of the handsome room decorated with hand-made holiday greenery. Picture Sadie and Mollie stringing popcorn and cranberries to decorate the tree as the aroma of popcorn fills the air.
These special holiday tours begin Thanksgiving evening, Nov. 25, and continue through Dec. 18. Private tours for groups of ten or more are welcome anytime throughout the holiday season, but reservations are required.
The Shriver House Museum, located in the heart of Gettysburg’s historic district at 309 Baltimore St., has earned numerous awards including the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission’s Historic Preservation Award. The museum has been used as a filming site for PBS, A&E, HGTV, CNN, BBC, Discovery Channel, Travel Channel and History Channel.
