More than 1,600 wreaths will be placed on graves throughout Gettysburg’s Soldiers’ National Cemetery on Dec. 3, as part of the Sgt. Mac Foundation and in honor of Gettysburg native Eric McColley, a U.S. Marine killed in the line of duty in 2006.

This year’s effort doubles the amount of wreaths placed last year by the Sgt. Mac Foundation. This is the fourth year for the wreath program, which includes cemeteries in Gettysburg and Quantico, Va., where McColley is buried.

U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Eric McColley was killed along with seven other Marines and two airmen in a helicopter crash in the Horn of Africa in February 2006. His parents, John and Susan McColley, are among the many involved in the Sgt. Mac Foundation.

With the financial assistance of local and other veterans organizations, private and business support we are able to expand this program,” said Stan Clark, of the Sgt. Mac Foundation. “We also received and are seeking assistance from any patriotic Americans across the Country.”

Any member of the public interested in helping place wreaths at the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg are asked to meet at the Giant Food Store parking lot on Route 30, east of Gettysburg at 8 a.m., on Friday, Dec. 3 to tie bows on the wreaths. At 12:45 p.m., the participants will meet at the Taneytown Road entrance to the cemetery to place the wreaths.

“We would like to expand the program every year but in order to do so, we need additional support financially and logistically,” said Clark. The cost of the wreaths this year is $ 7.50 each.
