The Gettysburg Civil War Battle Re-enactment was named one of the Top Events in North America by the American Bus Association, an organization of tour operators and group travel leaders in the United States and Canada.
Gettysburg’s annual re-enactment is one of the biggest in the country, drawing thousands of re-enactors and tens of thousands of spectators each year as part of the anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Over the course of several days, visitors watch battle re-creations, interact with soldiers and civilians in living history encampments, and learn about aspects of the Civil War, including medical demonstrations and period church services.
“The re-enactment is one of Gettysburg’s signature events,” said Norris Flowers, President of the Gettysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau, the organization that nominated the event. “With this designation, the event will draw added attention from the group travel market, something that is important to tourism in Adams County.”
Every year, a committee of ABA members sort through hundreds of nominations for celebrations, festivals, fairs and commemorative events. The winners were publicly announced this month.
In its designation, the ABA wrote, “Visitors experience live mortar demonstrations, multiple battles each day, expansive living history village and all-day activities. Experience camp life as you stroll through both the Union and Confederate camps where life is as it was in 1863.”
The Gettysburg Civil War Battle Re-enactment will be held July 6-8, 2012 at the Redding Farm just north of Gettysburg. For more information, call (717) 338-1525 or visit www.gettysburgreenactment.com.
