Five Gettysburg area bed and breakfasts are joining a national effort, headed by BnBFinder.com, to preserve sacred Civil War battleground as part of the war’s sesquicentennial anniversary, 2011-2015.

In the Gettysburg area, The Gaslight Inn, Battlefield Bed & Breakfast, Doubleday Inn, and the Shining Dawn Bed & Breakfast and Beechmont Inn in nearby Hanover, Pa., are participating in the program that involves 137 inns across 35 states that will donate a portion of each overnight booking to preservation efforts.

“Many of our inns have strong ties to the Civil War,” said Mary White, founder of BnBFinder.com. “Not only are some located on or near former battlefield sites, but others were built during or before the war began and survived.

The five participating Gettysburg inns are all within close proximity to the nation’s most visited battlefield, and the Soldiers’ National Cemetery, where Lincoln delivered the renowned Gettysburg Address.

“The guests win with a great vacation. The battlefield wins with funding to continue battlefield preservation. Our inn wins because a well-preserved battlefield gives guests a reason to come to Gettysburg,” said Florence Tarbox, Innkeeper of the Battlefield Bed & Breakfast.

BnBFinder.com is working directly with the Civil War Trust, a preservation organization which raises donations to save historically significant land associated with the Civil War in the United States. Recently, the Civil War Trust secured five acres of land known as Power’s Hill along the southern portion of the Gettysburg battlefield. That land has since been handed over to the Gettysburg National Military Park.

“When BnBFinder.com announced their Reservations for Preservation program, we jumped at the chance to participate,” said Helen Paine, Innkeeper at Shining Dawn B&B. “We see it as a fun and easy way to help preserve American history and to give something back.”

The program runs through May 2015 to support the Civil War Trust’s efforts to not only protect and preserve battleground, but educate the public about the educational value behind such land. Additionally, many inns through BnBFinder.com are offering Civil War or history-themed packages, events and specials to encourage visitors to travel during the 150th commemoration. Those packages can be found at www.bnbfinder.com/civilwar.

“It’s great to be part of this program,” said Becky Hanson with The Gaslight Inn. “Preserving the battlefield is important for future generations of visitors to Gettysburg, and we’re proud to be part of this effort.”

Gettysburg’s 150th Civil War Commemoration kicked off in April 2011 and continues through 2015. During this time, the region will host numerous events, expanded programs, along with new attractions and tours to commemorate the Civil War’s most famous battle and Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
