Beginning this spring, the Gettysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau is expanding its visitor information services to handle increased inquiries for the 150th anniversary commemoration of the Civil War.

Beginning in mid-May, the CVB plans to implement a program that features visitor information staff walking around town in order to talk with visitors and answer any questions they may have. Similar mobile visitor information programs have been established in other destinations, including Washington, D.C.

“In many cases, our visitors are just looking for ideas about where to eat, where to park or what’s going on,” said Norris Flowers, President of the Gettysburg CVB. “These volunteers will be able to be more accessible and help travelers that otherwise may not visit one of our information centers.”

These volunteers will be wearing recognizable vests and highly noticeable as they walk throughout the downtown area. In 2012, this program will be implemented during weekends of high visitation.

As part of this expansion of visitor information services, the Gettysburg CVB is planning to expand visitor information staff and hours at its locations on West Middle Street and the Historic Gettysburg Train Station in 2013 for the 150th anniversary.

Additionally, the CVB is reviewing locations to place a temporary visitor information center and staff to reach more visitors, including sites along the well-traveled Steinwehr Avenue.

“Over the next few years, Adams County is expected to see a significant increase in visitors, and the CVB wants to make sure it’s staffed to answer visitors’ questions, as well as providing encouragement for visitors to do more and stay longer,” said Norris Flowers, President of the Gettysburg CVB.

In 2013, the CVB plans to expand its staff to answer phones and visitors’ questions as they plan their trips from home. Visitors often need help finding places to stay, determining what times to visit and what to do once they arrive in Adams County.

Already, the CVB works with numerous volunteers to help address visitors’ needs and answer questions. More are needed as Gettysburg nears the 150th anniversary of the battle and the Gettysburg Address in 2013.

People interested in volunteering are asked to visit the CVB’s administration office at 571 West Middle St., Gettysburg, email [email protected] or call (717) 338-6274.
