Nearly 120 years ago, the Meade School opened its doors as a high school to students in the small town of Gettysburg, Pa. This month, the same building – educating thousands of children since 1897 – opened the same doors as an 18-suite boutique-style hotel on the western edge of America’s most famous Civil War destination.
Major renovation began on the deteriorating building in January 2012 as owner Peter Monahan had a vision for Gettysburg’s newest accommodation, the Federal Pointe Inn. The hotel is opening on the cusp of the 150th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Gettysburg and the Gettysburg Address in 2013.
“This building is one of the most iconic in Gettysburg,” said Monahan. “To the citizens of Gettysburg, it is and always will be the Meade School, but we have given this structure a new and exciting purpose, and it’s been well-received by local residents and visitors alike.”
The $1.5 million project included turning the building’s classrooms into 18 luxury suites. Each room features a 32-inch flat-screen television, a mini refrigerator, coffeemaker, granite bathrooms and renowned Civil War artist Dale Gallon’s acclaimed oil paintings. The carpet is imported from Israel and the rooms are furnished with pieces from the Willard Intercontinental Hotel in Washington, D.C.
The original wainscoting, framing for the blackboards and brick walls still remain as reminders of the building’s past. The hallways are spacious and accented with leather chairs, lamps and elegant chandeliers.
Amenities include a fitness center and meeting space, art galleries and complementary internet access.
“We know that history is important to Gettysburg visitors,” said Monahan. “And while this is a different period of history, preserving our past is something I’m sure our guests are going to appreciate.”
The Federal Pointe Inn is a part of Choice Hotel’s Ascend Collection. The hotel is located at 75 Springs Avenue, Gettysburg. For more information, visit www.federalpointeinn.com or call (717) 334-7800.
The grand opening of the hotel is in September, but reservations are now being taken through the hotel’s website, and guests have already enjoyed stays at Federal Pointe Inn.
