The American Kitefliers Association (AKA) conducted a lengthy search for their 31st annual convention and chose Boyds Bear Country in Gettysburg as the site of their first-ever competition in Pennsylvania.

Members of the public are invited to come out and watch these dazzling and colorful displays, demonstrations and competitions. There will be big kites, small kites, fighter kites and sport kites.

The event will begin at Boyds Bear Country, 75 Cunningham Road in Gettysburg, on Tuesday, Sept. 23 and continue until Saturday, Sept. 27. Activities will take place each day from noon to 5 p.m.

Competition events include:

  • Sport Kites
  • Comprehensive Kitemaking
  • Fighter Kites
  • Daily Mass Ascensions
  • Traction Kiting
  • Rokkaku Battles
  • Hot Trick Shootouts

The purpose of the American Kitefliers Association is to educate the public in art, history, technology and practice of building and flying kites and to advance the joy and value of kiting in all countries. The AKA supplies its members with tools for making kites, conducting kite festvals, setting up kite clubs and provides materials for use in classrooms.

Though the AKA convention is for members for complete their annual competition and receive their awards, the organization invites the public to view the competitions and to learn about the AKA and its mission.
